It’s not a matter of “if” you’ll need roadside assistance, but “when”. In a study recently conducted by Agero, 55% of vehicle owners reported they had at least one roadside event in the previous 12 months. In other words, 1 in 2 drivers will experience some type of roadside event every year–whether it be a flat tire or a mechanical breakdown that requires a tow.

Despite how common roadside events are, many drivers are unaware of when they can use roadside and how to request it when the need arises. The same study found that many respondents forgot they were covered, didn’t know what was included in their plan, or didn’t know how to initiate a request.

To help you gain a better understanding of how and when to use roadside assistance, we put together these Frequently Asked Questions so you’re prepared when you need it most.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Roadside assistance is a service that assists drivers when their vehicle breaks down or if they’re experiencing an issue that leaves them unable to operate their vehicle. There are a variety of sources for roadside assistance, but it’s most commonly available as a coverage option on auto insurance policies or provided through your vehicle or dealer warranty.

Roadside assistance typically covers flat tires, jump starts, fuel delivery, vehicle lockouts, winching, and tows. The coverage amount for each benefit is dependent on the roadside plan you have. To learn more about what your roadside coverage entails, check your auto policy, warranty, or program details to see what’s covered and if any limitations apply.

Contrary to what the name implies, roadside assistance isn’t just for the side of the road. You can utilize your coverage anywhere your vehicle needs assistance–including  a parking lot or your driveway. In fact, the majority of “roadside” events actually occur at home (42%), and in public parking lots (26%). Additionally, your plan may also include services that have nothing to do with driving–such as home lockouts.

Roadside assistance is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can use it any time your vehicle needs assistance in getting back on the road.

The two most common sources of roadside assistance are through your auto insurance policy or vehicle warranty. Here's how to find out if you're covered:

Auto insurance. Typically, roadside assistance coverage is available through your  auto insurance policy. Take a look into your policy to find out if you’re covered. You can do this online, on the mobile app, or give your insurance agent a call. You may also see roadside coverage information on your proof of insurance card.

Vehicle warranty. If you recently purchased a new vehicle, roadside assistance is  typically included in your warranty. If you purchased an extended service contract, you probably have roadside coverage. Take a look at your warranty or service contract to confirm, or reach out to the dealership you purchased your car from to learn more. Your vehicle may also include a sticker or window cling with information about roadside assistance.

The fastest, easiest, and most convenient way to access your roadside assistance plan is digitally. In addition to requesting help online, most roadside assistance providers offer a mobile app that provides the best roadside experience. If available, download the app on your phone and set up your user account. Whether it’s through the website, mobile app or phone, familiarize yourself with where and how to submit a roadside request so you’re adequately prepared when faced with an actual event.

If your auto insurance or new vehicle warranty doesn’t include roadside assistance as a base offering, you can usually add it on to your auto insurance policy. Some carriers offer different tiers of roadside so you can choose the coverage that best suits your needs. You can shop and learn more about roadside plans and rates on your carrier’s website–including how to add it to your policy. If you have additional questions or concerns, reach out directly to your carrier or agent.
